Orvis Encounter Waders Review: Helping You Become One With the Water

Orvis Encounter Waders

If you ever go fishing right out in the water, then you will need something to keep you dry while you stand. That is where waders come into the picture. This overall-like product usually features a waterproof material that keeps water out as long as keeping it above your chest.

If you have never shopped for waders before, then the Orvis brand is usually an excellent place to start. The Orvis Encounter Waders represents a middle ground in the fishing hear market — quality, but at an affordable price.

But does the brand actually live up to its reputation? In this Orvis Encounter Waders review, we take an in-depth analysis to find out.

What Are Orvis Encounter Waders And What Do They Do?

The Orvis Encounter Waders are a waterproof pair of outerwear that looks similar to a similar. When you put on a couple of waterproof shoes or boots over the water, then you can wade (hence the name) out into the water. As long as you do not go into water that rises above your chest, then you will be perfectly dry.

As such, these types of outerwear work great with certain types of fishing that require you to get into shallow water to fish. For example, fly fishing usually works best when you position yourself as close to the fish as possible.

Similarly, certain types of net fishing with smaller species would not be enjoyable (especially in colder water) without a good pair of waders. In terms of the Orvis brand, the Encounter Waders fall on the cheaper side of their product line.

Some of the company’s more involved products cost quite a lot more than the asking price for the Encounter. But this price difference fact does not make the Encounters bad in any sense of the word. The lighter and more streamlined design works great for light fishing.

But if you need something sturdy that can handle rugged wilderness, then you may want to invest in one of their more expensive products.

The company also goes out of its way to provide a variety of sizes for all types of bodies. So, if you have trouble finding your size elsewhere, then Orvis is an excellent place to start.

There are four layers of nylon included on the product. It is light enough to breathe in the spring, but still heavy enough to keep out water. The material feels like the same kind of stuff that covers the outside of life jackets, so it is tough enough to withstand light thorns, thistles, and other minorly sharp objects.

The Orvis company makes its product out of a nylon exterior product with a urethane inside for insulation against the water and temperature. The product does not feature hip pockets but instead offers a kangaroo-like pocket in the middle of the chest area.

You can order the Orvis Encounter Waders with attachable boots, or without them. If you order with the shoes, then you get an adjustable pair of Wellington style boots that cost an additional one hundred and seventy-one dollars.

If you order the product without the attachable boots, then you receive a product with built-in stock booties made of neoprene.

The pocket features both zip up section and a single mesh storage section. One great thing about the Orvis brand is it fits a wide selection of body types. If you find that you do not always fit into the conventional kinds of sizes, then the Orvis Encounter Waders will be a good choice for you.

The company offers the standard selection of S, M, L, XL, XXL, as well as select sizes in long and short, for taller or broader individuals. Unfortunately, you cannot machine wash the apparel or else you will damage it. As such, you can only hand remove it once it gets too dirty.

How Does Orvis Encounter Waders Compare With Other Top Brands?

In this section of the Orvis Encounter Waders review, we compare the brand with two other top sellers in the water-proof market. Specifically, we examine the product with Hodgman Caster Neoprene Cleated Bootfoot Chest Waders and OXYVAN Waders Waterproof Lightweight Fishing Waders with Boots.

We select these two brands because they offer two products that provide a variety of pros and cons, but at a much different asking price. As such, we think they might be good options for people looking for a more affordable pair of waders.

If you want a pretty good replica of the Orvis Encounter Waders at a slightly lower price, then the Hodgman Caster Neoprene Cleated Bootfoot Chest Waders are for you. They use a different material, but they still offer a good combination of lightweight and all season usability.

  • ease of use

The OXYVAN Waterproof Lightweight Fishing waders mix nylon material and PVC into an incredibly affordable product that you can wear even in cold weather. If you want an excellent all-purpose pair of waders that you can also use for farm work, then we recommend this brand.

Orvis Encounter Waders Pros And Cons

The two big pros associated with the product is the comfort and the lightness of the wader. Both of these factors come from the excellent nylon material that the product uses. One thing we love about the Orvis Encounter Waders is the fact that you can use them in every season.

As long as you insulate yourself properly, you can even use them in cold winter weather. However, they are also light enough to wear loosely with shorts in Spring.

The lightness and breathability are one of our favorite features associated with the product. You will not break out in sweats on a hot day like some of the other brands on this list.

However, the Orvis Encounter Waders are not perfect. The product occupies a middle zone where it costs the right amount of money compared to the cheap products on Amazon but does not feature the established durability of some of the more expensive models.

The durability is perhaps the biggest issue. While the nylon might be comfortable, it is not the best at protecting. Some people reported leaks in their Orvis Encounter Waders within three months of using them. However, part of this con likely relates to the environment you use them in.

If you fish in an area with a lot of debris and other types of sharp objects, then it might be worth investing in a more durable pair of waders.

  • Comfortable and breathable
  • Wearable in different weather
  • Good quality nylon

  • Expensive
  • Sometimes fall apart

Orvis Encounter Waders Review Conclusion

No products found.

In our opinion, the Orvis Encounter Waders represent a pretty great value if you care a lot about comfort and breathability in a brand. However, it is essential to remember that the product is not for everyone. The wader might remain a little too light for people who fish in areas with a lot of potential spiky brush.

If you do not care about comfort, then you are better off with one of the other affordable brands we listed in the comparison section. But, if you spend six to eight hours a day fishing in waders, then you quickly realize the importance of a comfortable pair of waders.

So if you want quality without breaking the bank, then the Encounter Waders will work for you as such our final review stands at four stars out of five stars. We hope this Orvis Encounter Waders review helped you decide whether or not the product fits your needs.

Waders are a great way of becoming one with water and nature, especially if you live in swampy or marshy areas. They can also significantly improve dirty farm work that involves messy animals like pigs. And if you do not mind the asking price, then we think the Orvis brand offers a quality product. Good luck!
